can you fire on flowers, leaves and twigs onto ceramic clay?
hey guys! i'm teaching ceramics for the FIRST time this summer at a camp for special need students and i was thinking of different lesson ideas. I wanted to make pinch pots with texture. The camp will be in the woods so there will be an abundance of leaves, flowers, twigs and etc. I was wondering if it is possible to use these materials as a form of stamps to stamp on textures to the clay surface. Also should i just leave them on and will they burn off in the kiln?
It will be fantastic if you also have any other tips/ideas for a first time ceramics teacher... i teach everything else but never quite ceramics to children.

If you leave them, they will burn off in the kiln. Depending on temps, they may leave some ash - like wood firing on a small scale.
A problem with pressing in pinch pots is possible distortion of the carefully made pot - pot too stiff and the pressing won't work - pot too soft and shape changes. And while leaves will curve to a shape, twigs will not, the pot may have to be pushed into them.
Impressing may be better done either by rolling into flat slabs and doing slab assembly or
rolling into a small soft slab which is then cut around and applied to leather hard or softer pinch pot so it stands up as a decoration -
