The Highest Points in the Days and Works of Diego Velasquez
Painting is one of the most sublime art forms, giving the painter a a way to speak to his or her audience in a very different way; there have been many movements in painting from abstract to realist, but the purpose and spirit is the same. Moving forward, when one thinks of a Spanish painter, one cannot help but keep in mind that most of the well-known painters of Spain lived and flourished during the Golden Age. One Spanish painter that made a clear distinction of them all is Diego Velasquez; he became one of Spain’s highly influential and most adored master of his era. Velasquez was known to share a strong friendship with King Philip IV and made many popular pieces including his specialty which is portraitures.
In June 5, 1599 in Seville, Diego Velasquez was born, coming from a family that is just an average class and being the first born of six children. During his early years he began studying the art of painting and when he reached age eleven, Master Painter Francisco Pacheco became his teacher and his progress was very quick and by time he reached eighteen years old he was already a master painter, certified by the painters’ guild and with it he can paint as a professional. Velasquez later on became the husband of Pacheco’s daughter and worked by painting with religious themes and creating still life paintings of tavern pieces; through it he earned plenty of money and bought a nice house for them and another house to be rented out.
Diego Velasquez’s career was marked by impressive and extraordinary paintings, pegging him as one of the country’s most celebrated painters. Among his known paintings is Surrender of Breda which he produced when he met Marques de Spinola; the piece symbolizes the victory of Spinola and it was said that Spinola was dazed and in awe when he saw the painting and cannot believe how amazing Velasquez’ skill is to express emotion through realism in his portraits. However, if there is one painting which you can acknowledge to be greatest and most popular among Diego Velasquez’s works, that would be the Las Meninas; it became so determining of his style that until today, it has made its way into the classrooms of different universities worldwide as people study realist paintings.
These are just but a gaze of Spain’s most famous master artist, his works and life is truly an inspiration to many people; he truly is deserves to be called one of the greatest painter that ever lived.
